“Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication” …. Leonardo da Vinci

A Classic White Tailored shirt, for me,  is a must-have in my wardrobe.

I have been wearing vintage men’s white tailored shirts for as long as I can remember.  That is throughout my teens; emulating the singer from Promises in the black pants, Moa collared white shirt and thin braces, and later taking on Uma Thurman’s style from Pulp Fiction, and the list goes on ……

A great white shirt is timeless, sharp and easy to style to suit you (just like a black jacket).  A white shirt can take you from day to night, night to morning, lunch to dinner – anywhere, with a few little tweaks along the way.

I say ‘tailored’ and ‘classic’, but there are many great versions of this.  For me, a classic white shirt is a man’s style shirt, made of crisp white cotton.  But this is very loose, as it may have various collar styles (Moa, button down, tuxedo), different cuts and tailoring, pleated front, formal cuffs, long cuffs or even back detailing, and many more.

Right now we find big cuffs, front tuck in, or open to reveal a great cammi (or nothing) on trend!  But really, none of these rules apply too vigorously.  Wearing a classic white shirt is not trend driven, it’s YOU driven.  This shirt can provide so many different looks and cover so many occasions, that we should wear it how it works best for us.

As with most classic pieces, they come in different styles, fits, qualities and price points.  Try on different labels and fits to decide which works for your style, budget and is most flattering.  (Try Sportscraft, Target, Xander, Witchery, Rag and Bone and Zara online or in store to see what styles are about.)

I’m a white shirt and jeans girl and wear some version of a white shirt every week (at least).  Most of the white tailored shirts I’ve owned over the years have been vintage, and still are.  My absolute favourites are my vintage men’s tux shirts, with traditional pleated bib, pin buttons and very long cuffs.  I also love my A-line moa collar with bib (Zara), high-low cotton (Levis) and a fab silk-cotton formal (Country Road) -. and maybe a few more!!

I love a tailored white shirt with any jeans for most occasions, adding different accessories, some fun sneakers or ballet flats, and maybe an edgy jacket to change up the look.  For evening, it’s simple to take a white shirt with any style black pants (the right style for you) or skirt  (the best length for you) and simple accessory, a splash of colour for your shoes and you look elegant and sophisticated!

Wear it with your fave jeans and sneakers for relaxing or add a ballet flat and great accessories for lunch out with the girls. Alternatively, wear it with a wonderful black skirt, heels and simple accessories for an elegant evening look.

Note: One drawback …. ironing, but it’s worth it!!
